Dear Diary….

How many of you had a diary growing up? Did you write in it faithfully? Do you still have piles of them hanging around in the attic or basement just waiting for you to open them up and cringe at what your deepest thoughts were at the age of 11 or 17 or 33? Do you still keep a diary today?

I have kept a diary or journal or whatever you want to call it on and off for years. I wasn’t always the best at writing in it every day. That seems kind of funny now that I am a writer full time, but there were some days and weeks that nothing happened…it was just plain boring and who wants to write about that?

My diaries contained the usual drivel that many young girls write about…the boys I liked and the things that happened in school or church youth group. It was probably the most horrific thing to read. Thank God I never kept any of them. We moved around a lot, so I tend to purge my things every few years. In landfills all across America there sits in multiple trash bags my most intimate thoughts and if anybody found them, they would get a good laugh.

It would always amaze me when I would read about other people keeping diaries throughout history. Harry S. Truman, Sylvia Plath, Anne Frank, Andy Warhol and many others kept a daily recording of their lives. I would envision them sitting at their desk, pen in hand, writing about the events of the day before falling asleep.

It would inspire me to begin again. So, I would pull out my notebook and my pen and begin writing. But life was still boring, so I started adding favorite quotes and song lyrics to my diary. I think one year, probably 1982, I had all the songs from Duran Duran written in there. I would add favorite bible verses and movie quotes. And my diary began to evolve into something different…something that remains today.

I call it my writers notebook today and in typical Tracie style it is a squiggle line of everything. Ideas to write about, favorite lines from books and movies and songs. Little snippets of life events and to do lists. Everything goes into whatever notebook I am writing in at the moment. It is actually a more accurate account of my life than anything I wrote back in the day. And one day it will be taken out and disposed of, like all the others. And I will put out another notebook and begin again.

***Question for the comments…Did you keep a diary growing up? Do you still? Was it in a fancy journal or a plain notebook? Do you still have them?

Life Coaching…What is it?

I have always been good at giving people advice. I don’t know why, but people always ask for my opinion on different aspects of their lives, and I have always been able to guide them in the right direction. Or at the very least, given them things to think about to help them in their quest towards finding the right path.

For years I always said I would make a good Life Coach and I kept telling people I would love to do that. Everyone said I would be great at it, but I didn’t know where to begin. Until the pandemic hit. Some things are Divine Appointments, right?

I was home doing nothing, like most people were in the spring of 2020 and scrolling through Facebook when I saw an ad. It was for a Master Life Coach certification and the company was offering 90% off as a “pandemic special”. I thought “that’s cool” and kept on scrolling. Then, I saw it every day, multiple times a day, and finally I decided to look at it. For $49 it was a course for 4 different types of certifications and that made a Master Certification. Hmmm…intriguing…I read on.

After going on the website, I found the company to be legit and decided to sign up. I mean for 49 bucks; can you really go wrong? I loved it! It was a go at your own pace course, so I sat in front of the computer for hours a day soaking up the information I would need to help people. I got through the course, received my certification and then, in true Tracie fashion, did nothing. (Life Coach heal thyself.)

What is a Life Coach? A Life Coach will help you figure out how to reach your goals. A lot of people have a hard time figuring out exactly what they would like to do in life both personally and professionally and a Life Coach can help them figure that out and give them strategies to get there. It is NOT therapy, that is something totally different.

If you have been with me for a while, you know I have a problem with follow through. I go round and round between 4-5 different career choices and never follow through on any of them. That is because I am what they call multi-passionate. I want to do it all, but then end up doing nothing. A lot of people fall into this category. Some people can do all 5 things and be great at them. I cannot. I need to choose.

And so, I have decided to choose Life Coaching and Writing. I am good up to two, after that nothing gets done to completion. I have chosen a name for my company and made an email address for it. I am stoked because I always like to help people and can now do it on a larger scale. I had a meeting last year with a friend of mine who does this for a living on a large scale and asked for her advice. She told me I would be really good at it and gave me some tips to get there. Why didn’t I do it then? Because I was scared.

I have never run a business before and that was/is the holdup. I didn’t want the running of the business to be wrong. The helping people part I can do, that has never been the issue. I was listening to a podcast the other day by a big-time network marketer, and she said to just go do it, even if it’s messy. You learn by doing. It’s not going to be perfect at first, but it will get better the more you do it. I am taking her advice, thanks Jessie Lee. I am still nervous about doing it wrong, but I’ve been wrong before and I will be again…it’s all good.

***Question for the comments…Have you ever not done something out of fear of failure? When you look back on it now can you see how it could work, even if you did it messy? Does that make you want to try it again?

Do You Journal?

Have you ever written in a journal or a diary? Writing down your secret thoughts or dreams in a book for your eyes only? I have written in journals since I was in elementary school, and I have always loved the experience.

They have all sorts of blank books you can write in. Everything from the cheap spiral 1-subject notebooks you used to use in school to really expensive cloth covered books with pretty designs. I think I have tried just about every type of journal out there to write in, and my favorite is still the old-time marble composition books. I don’t know why, but they are just my go to every time. Nowadays, I just pick up a bunch at the beginning of the school year when they cost like 50 cents at Walmart. That’s when they have all the great colors too.

And don’t get me started on pens to write with. O.k., too late…I’m started, Lol. I think I have said before that my favorite pen to write with is the cheap blue Bic pen. You may say that it doesn’t matter, a pen is a pen is a pen, but no, they are not. It has to feel right in your hand as the ink glides smoothly over the paper. I really like felt tip pens as well, but you have to make sure the paper is thick enough, so it doesn’t bleed through. I know a lot of people who use a journal app on their phone or computer. I tried that once, but I am mainly an ink to paper kind of girl.

You might be wondering about what exactly you would write about in a diary/journal, the answer is anything and everything. This is for your eyes only, so whatever you have to say, go for it. Thank goodness I no longer have my diaries from my early years through high school. They were truly cringe worthy. Always the same old drivel of who I had a crush on and why my mother won’t let me go to the dance or whatever. Don’t get me wrong, all those things were important at that time in my life, but I am glad I don’t have to reread them now.

Now, when I write in my notebook, there are various things I put in there. It could be prayers or answers to writing prompts I see on Pinterest or favorite quotes and bible verses. I really don’t write about my day-to-day life anymore, but there are times if something really good happens. So really, my notebook is just a big squiggle line of everything…makes total sense for me.

Journals, diaries or whatever you want to call them are great ways to get your feeling out when you don’t want to share it with anyone else. They give you the freedom to be exactly who you are without censor. They can also be a place where to can let your creativity come out. If you have never journaled before, give it a try, you might find out you love it. And if you already do, keep it up, it really is one of the best things.

***Question for the comments…Do you or have you ever kept a journal or diary? What kind of paper and pen do you like to use? What is your favorite thing about keeping a journal?

Tell Me…

First of all, thank you, thank you, thank you. I am exactly four months into writing my blog and I am very happy people are actually interested in it. In the beginning, I had doubts. I knew my sister would read it and maybe a few friends…my crew always comes in with the support, but as I look through the analytics, I see people from all over the world stop by to give it a read and I am stoked.

My follow count is on the rise slow but steady and I appreciate all of you. The fact that other bloggers are tuning in makes me feel I am going in the right direction. Truth be told…I have no idea what I am doing. I found a site, made a page and just starting writing. As I sit down in front of the computer every time, I feel like I am home. Writing is in my DNA. I don’t know where it came from, but it is there, and I finally feel I am doing what I am meant to do in this crazy life.

I am wondering if I could ask for a couple of favors. Nothing big or dramatic, just a few things to help me along. If you subscribe to my blog, tell me what you liked and what you want to see. I have said this before and the answer I got was to just keep doing what I was doing. I appreciate that, it shows you like my writing style and the subjects I have talked about so far. My friend James gave me a couple of topics that I did use and gave him full credit for the subject matter that day. It was a little challenging and I liked it. You know my style of writing…it’s just like sitting down and having a conversation with me, so please let me know what you want to chat about. I would love to expand my topic log. The only thing off limits is politics. I decided long ago to not even deal with that subject matter. So, please, if you wanna hear my take on something, let me know in the comments.

Speaking of comments…I would totally dig it if more people stopped by to say Hi and leave a thought on any post they read. I have a few people that comment to each and every one and I thank you. I look forward to responding to each and every one of them. I wanted my blog to be a place where you grab your coffee (or your beverage of choice), give it a read and be part of the conversation. I know you don’t have the time to forever be on my blog; you have other things to do, but maybe if you have commented on something in the past go back and see what others are saying. Check back to see if other people besides me have liked your comment and responded to you. I love to see all my peeps mingle. And if you like what I write, please give the post a like by hitting the star. It helps me to get a feel for what people are into.

To all my visitors out there, I see you too. I mean, I don’t see who you are, but I see the number of visitors that hit the blog daily and I appreciate you. If you visit on a semi regular basis, because you hit the link whenever I post it on Facebook, Instagram, etc. please consider becoming a subscriber. Put your email in and the blog will come directly to you. Don’t worry, I am not using your email for anything else but this blog. I won’t be giving it to anyone else either…I am not into scam.

One more thing…I am thinking about adding another day. I started off with 2 days, then went to 3 when the holidays started, only because I had a lot to say about Christmas, LOL, but I realized I liked writing more. I usually sit down to write the post right before I publish it and I find myself missing it on the days when the blog doesn’t come out. I haven’t decided which day but be on the lookout for it.

Thanks again for reading. I am grateful you take the time. It makes me think of the Oscar speech Sally Field gave a long time ago. It’s been misquoted a lot, but she looked at the crowd and said, “You like me…” Thanks for liking me.
