It’s Not Pumpkin Time Yet

I understand that we like to rush everything these days. We are on the go constantly and social media has us updated on the newest things in a second, but does that mean we have to rush everything?

If you have been with me this past year on the Squiggle Line Cafe, you know I like everything to have its place at the right time. I like to savor the moments in my life and fully appreciate them. And at the top of the list for me is the seasons. Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall…they are all wonderful and should be lived to the fullest. I don’t think they should be rushed through just to get to the next one. What’s the fun in that?

I know might sister right now is thinking that I don’t even have seasonal weather in Hawaii, so what does it matter to me. It matters even more to me here. I might not be able to go see the fall leaves or the first snow flurry or the first buds of spring, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the changing of the seasons. I have my rituals in place to celebrate each season.

We are in the last days of summer. Labor Day is on Monday, the weather hasn’t even begun to change that much, so I have to ask the question…why am I seeing Pumpkin Spice everywhere already? It’s too early.

O.k., I admit it. I am jonesing for a pumpkin spice latte. Why wouldn’t I be? They are delicious and I drink them almost daily in the Fall. But it is not Fall yet. Technically, Fall does not begin until September 22 this year. I understand most people can’t wait that long, I get it, but can we at least hold out until Tuesday? I used to wait until October 1st. to have my first sip of the pumpkin, but I have moved that up to the first day of fall.

And another question, why does everything have to come in pumpkin spice flavor now? I understand scented candles and I can maybe get behind body wash and lotions, but the things I see now are crazy. Here is a list of some items available: various cereals, M&Ms, Oreos and wait for it…SPAM…yup, you heard me correctly. Most of the country hates Spam, Hawaii loves it, but it is not manufactured here, so you can’t blame that one on us, LOL.

Look, I know what’s going to happen when I hit Walmart this week. I will see all the fall things. I understand marketing, really, I do. Halloween candy will be in all the isles next to the discounted school supplies. What I don’t understand is when I start to see Christmas decorations next to the Halloween candy and I hear “Jingle Bells” over the stores radio system before I have even had my first pumpkin spice latte of the year…but that is a rant for another day.

***Question for the comments…When to do start with the fall food and drinks? Do you like to rush the seasons? If you like pumpkin spice lattes, when do you buy your first one of the season?

  1. I personally hate pumpkin spice flavored anything, except pumpkin pie. And it’s such a misnomer calling it “pumpkin spice”. Pumpkin is not a spice, it is a fruit. The spices that go INTO pumpkin pie are another matter. I love the smell of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and brown sugar. As a matter of fact, I simmer a pot of water with those whole spices all day in the winter. The whole “pumpkin spice” thing is stupid and overrated and anyone who buys into it is buying the media hype. Yes, that includes you, darling sister. You think it’s good because you’ve been programmed to. Also, don’t think I’m gonna let that no-seasonal Hawaii thing slip by. You miss the fall, your FAVORITE season. You want to come home, you’re just to stubborn to admit it. 🤣🤣🤣

  2. You two are really funny! I do believe that you two could host a morning radio show!!! Anyway, I agree that it is too early for Pumpkin. I don’t really do coffee but I do make pumpkin bread and it’s just too early for that yet. I grew my own baking pumpkins one season and they aren’t really ready to harvest until September anyway. And waiting for a season brings anticipation and builds character! I believe all the seasons start too early in the stores so I just look the other way and pretend the seasonal items aren’t there until I’m ready for them 😂
