Turn the Page

I just finished reading Matthew McConaughey’s book “Greenlights”, and I highly recommend it to everyone. It’s funny, I never really sought out his movies or thought about him much in terms of who my favorite actors are, but after having read this book, I see him in a whole new light. He is smart and funny and very insightful, an old soul who knows how to have a good time. Like I said, read the book.

But the thing I want to talk about today is a quote from one of the stories he mentions. It’s not a story about him, it’s just a retelling, but this quote totally hit me. Here it is..

” I have never had any trouble turning the page in the book of my life.”

-Darrell Royal, former football coach, University of Texas

Sometimes things just hit me like a ton of bricks, this one did. Matthew goes on to say that if you are in a rut or you need to change things up a bit, but you are feeling stuck, remember, you are the author of the book of your life. Don’t like how something is working? Tired of making the same mistakes? TURN THE PAGE!!

If you know me at all, you know I am totally in my head all the time. I over analyze, I hold on to things too long, go back and forth, never really letting go of things I know I should. Even when I have made a decision to let an idea go, I still hold on to it. I don’t know why, all it does it drive me crazy. I keep going over it thinking maybe I should hold on to it “just in case”. Anybody else ever fee like that? I just have a hard time knowing when to give up the ghost.

But after reading that quote and the insights that go along with it, I feel energized. Don’t want to do this thing anymore? Turn the page. Ready to give up that in your life? Turn the page. Want to start the new thing you have been dreaming of? Turn the page.

I went through this yesterday with all the things that have been swirling around in my head. And as I said turn the page (yes, I said it out loud, I was alone, so it was okay), I literally could see a page turning over in my mind. To me there is nothing more exciting than opening a notebook to a fresh page. It’s clean, not written on yet, totally full of possibilities. It’s where the adventure begins.

Do you have anything going on that may not be serving you anymore? Do you have an idea that you been longing to try, but are afraid to? Go ahead…turn the page. Once the page is turned, don’t go back and reread the old parts, press on and write the new chapter. Go for it…turn the page.

***Question for the comments…Have you read a quote that totally got you? That it changed your whole way of thinking?

Hi, I'm Tracie. I am a writer, reader, life coach, lover of the city and the beach. I am a big fan of all things caffeinated. I dig things from many different decades, but am a definite child of the 80's. My blog is about everything and anything my mind conjures up. Enjoy the ride.

  1. Alright, alright, ALRIGHT! Dink! Turn the page… So, what you’re saying is you’re a hoarder of thoughts, got it. And I do something better than a fresh page, a new notebook! Time to turn the page to “Moving to the beach”

  2. Tracie, I’m so glad we both loved MMc’s book recommended by Kelly! A lot of good information! Yes that is one of the favorite quotes I remember…turn the page! I must now think of things I need to rid my mind of and clean my house (brain) by turning the page💕

  3. I have read quotes that have changed my way of thinking but I can’t remember any of them right now. Lol. Yours is a good one. I feel that I have turned the page many times without knowing that was what I was doing … I am now interested in reading that book. I have always like Mr McConaughey, as an actor and as a person. I didn’t know he wrote a book. Thank you for the tip!
