Music of the Summer

Do you find yourself listening to different music in the summer than at different times of the year? Or is it just me? There is just something about the summertime that hits me different. I am sure it does for a lot of you also, eating different foods, change in the schedule, maybe more of a relaxed pace. But for me…it changes the music I listen to and some of things I watch.

I have always listened to beach/surf music, and I have always listened to it all year long. The Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffet and Jan and Dean have always been on the playlist and since moving to Hawaii I have added others to the list. But back in the day, in the middle of a snowstorm, you could catch me listening to my parents 8 track tape (yeah, that’s what I said…the 8 track, LOL) of The Beach Boys “Endless Summer”. Surf music is a part of my daily life, just like the 80’s are…it’s just a fact.

What changes for me in the summer is I become obsessed with listening to 50s, 60s and 70s music. I like music from all eras, if you were to look at my library of music on my phone, you would see everything from Bing Crosby to Lady Gaga. I don’t know why, but summertime to me means the oldies station. To me it represents a simpler time, a fun time to just chill and relax. I could be crazy, and I probably am, but that is how I see it. I am currently listening to the 60s and 70s station on Pandora and it only 6:47 a.m., but it gets me going and makes me happy. Currently listening to “Cracklin’ Rosie” by Neil Diamond.

Another thing that happens is I get an overwhelming desire to watch beach movies. I am talking about the old Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello “Beach Party” movies. Yes, they are kinda corny, but I dig them. I also rewatch all my favorite Gidget stuff. Well, actually Gidget is another all-year thing, because ever since I first saw Sally Field as Gidget on a rerun in the 70s, I have been hooked and wanted to be her. My IG name is GidgetHawaii, so there you go.

Another music genre I listen to more in the summertime is country. I do not like all country music and I have no idea about new stuff, but I do have a playlist of about 80 songs that are fun that I listen to. Summer is like a big party for me, even if all I am doing is sitting around the house doing nothing. In fact, I just switched over and am listening to Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker’s “When the Sun Goes Down” I may have to bring out my bongos when I am finished writing this.

Do you want to know what brought on this stroll down summer music lane? I was listening to Pandora last night and The Monkees “I’m a Believer” came on. I immediately felt the need to watch the series, which I have been known to do, also in the summer, and found it on You Tube. Sweet, going to watch a few episodes here and there, because I love that show. Yeah, it was silly, but that was the point…silly is fun and sometimes we all need a little silly in our lives, remember that…fun and silly is what makes the world go round.

If you find yourself out of sorts this summer and you really don’t know why, go listen to something fun or watch something silly. Things have been a little too serious lately, we all need a little fun and good times. It’s what keeps us going…fun is where it is at…go find some.

*** Question for the comments…Do you switch up your musical tastes in the summer? Is there anything you watch that you normally don’t? I hope so, I hope it’s just not me, LOL!!

Hi, I'm Tracie. I am a writer, reader, life coach, lover of the city and the beach. I am a big fan of all things caffeinated. I dig things from many different decades, but am a definite child of the 80's. My blog is about everything and anything my mind conjures up. Enjoy the ride.

  1. O.M.G! Yesterday,YESTERDAY I was thinking you needed to do a blog about summer music. Beach Boys and Buffett are definitely summer-only music. It’s like Christmas music. Only from Thanksgiving until Jan 6. Now I really wanna listen to Kid Rock”All Summer Long.” I think I will, I think I WILL (old building and loan pal 😉)
