Vacation…All I Ever Wanted!!!

It’s June, which means kids are getting out of school and it’s time for families to start planning their summer schedules. Maybe the kids are playing summer sports, or they have to go to summer school, or maybe they stay inside playing video games all summer. Whatever the case may be, in the middle of all the activities, a lot of families take a vacation. They load up the car or hop on a plane and they go spend a week or two or more relaxing somewhere that isn’t home. Was that your family?

Growing up we really didn’t do the whole vacation thing. In fact, instead of taking a vacation we would move and sometimes that would be across the country. I have said before that I liked moving around, because I got to meet new people all the time, but I was a little jealous of kids that went on vacation every year. I’m not even talking about vacations where they took off to exotic places, I was jealous of the kids that went to the beach every year.

You know the type, they either owned a place at the shore or they rented the same location every year. It was a routine, and they knew where they were going every year at the same time. They hung out with the same kids every year on vacation, did the same things…I would have liked that. My sister went to live with my father as a teenager and my mother kept us from them (big drama…not worth getting into) and they always went down the shore every year. I never knew this until I was an adult and got back in touch with that side of the family. It just sounds so cool to hear the stories. I have, since then, spend time at the beach house with the family, but it is a totally different experience as an adult…still fun, just different.

That doesn’t mean we never took a vacation. My parents had a timeshare at Heritage USA, which was the big complex owned by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. Say what you will about the Bakker’s (and there is a lot to say), but the place was amazing. I was in my early teens and the place was so safe, I could wander around alone. We only went a few times, but I had a blast. I actually wished we had made that a yearly thing. My big claim to fame there was one day at the water park, I met Kim Fields, Tootie from “The Facts of Life” and we spent the afternoon hanging out together. But things happened and the place shut down.

Here, in Hawaii, a lot of people do a staycation. They may go camping or they may rent a room in nice hotel and take the kids for a long weekend. Something out of the ordinary and it sounds like a great idea. It gives you the feel of going on vacation, but without all the stress of getting on a plane. It’s easier to get away on the mainland. You can drive to other states and do all sorts of things, but the only way off the island is by plane, which is a little pricy for a lot of people. So, you take the kids into Waikiki for a staycation and do some touristy things. Despite what people may think, not everybody is at the beach all the time here.

Let me ask you, did you vacation as a kid? Was it an every year thing or just a few times here and there? If you vacation now, where is your favorite place to go? I haven’t been on an actual vacation in a long time and for me that’s okay.

When I first moved here, I kind of treated every day like a vacation. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I worked, but I took the time to enjoy my surroundings, to take long walks and enjoy the weather, we went to the beach a lot on the weekends, and I ate fresh local foods. But little by little, I fell back into old routines of eating junk, staying home and not doing anything…I used to have a tan, which was pretty incredible with my white, Irish skin, lol. And it is all because of me, I let myself go, I let myself fall back into bad patterns. But it’s time for a change, it’s time to get back to how I was when I first moved to Hawaii, when everyday was a staycation…

***Question for the comments…did you vacation as a kid? What was the best vacation you ever went on?

  1. I can’t remember ever going on a trip with my family as a vacation…most of the time I was in summer school catching up…but when summer cool was over mom and dad sent me to Waimanalo to stay with with my Godmother which was great for me hanging out with my cousins Willy, Carla, and Kahea…other then that I only took one vacation trip with Jaymi and Wailana to disneyland…I was living in Kona at the time and I couldn’t believe they invited me…best trip ever!!!
