Summertime Concert Series

I love going to outdoor concerts in the summer. Hearing music under the stars…there is just something magical about it. It just hits differently than being inside a concert hall. And I am not talking about arena concerts, even though they are technically outside. I am talking about the cheaper lawn seats, where you bring your own chair or blanket and maybe a picnic and just hang out and listen to the music.

Growing up in Baltimore we had a concert place called Merriweather Post Pavillion (it’s still there, I’m not). Every year about this time, the newspaper would print out the schedule of all the shows playing that summer. There is a piece of an old advertisement in the photo collage above that I found on Pinterest.

I would look at every band coming to town and concert date and see which ones I would like to go to. In middle school, I didn’t go to any, but I would imagine myself there as I highlighted the concerts I would have loved to see. This was back in the early 80’s, so for some reason, I remember I highlighted Asia…I only remember one song by them, so don’t ask me what I was thinking.

As I got into high school, we went to see some shows there. Always on the lawn, never the pavilion. The tickets were cheaper, which is always a good thing. We could walk around and still hear the music. I don’t remember the bands I saw there in high school, probably flash in the pan, one hit wonders that we thought were so amazing back then. The kind of bands that when I hear their one song on the radio now, I can’t even remember who they are.

The best outdoor, sitting on the lawn concert I ever saw was…Jimmy Buffet. He is, in my humble opinion, the best outdoor concert performer ever. I will say it loud and proud that I am a Parrot head. I have always been a fan and I always will be. I remember going to see him in concert with a few friends and everybody was making margaritas, drinking rum drinks and cooking on a small grill. Just chilling outside with good friends, good food and good music; it doesn’t get much better than that. I missed him the last time he played at The Waikiki Shell, but I will not miss him again, even if I have to go alone.

Multi-day outdoor festivals are another story. I totally love the idea of going and spending the weekend camping and listening to some great music…in theory. But I don’t know if I have the stamina to see it through. I love to watch about Woodstock and see the sights and watching the promoters get breakfast together for everyone…it speaks to the little piece of hippie in me. In reality, I couldn’t do it. I am not much of a camper, unless you count a cabin in the woods with cable and a hot shower.

Here in Hawaii, I have the opportunity to see local bands play outside. Mainly you see them at the outdoor bars. The Barefoot Bar at Duke’s in Waikiki is a great place to sit outside, have a drink and listen to some music. The warm, tropical breezes, the umbrella drink and good tunes with a view of the ocean? It doesn’t get much better than that.

Wow, I have really walked myself down a great memory lane here. It is too early for a rum drink. Yes, I know it’s 5:00 somewhere, but it’s too early for me. I will have to be content with listening to a little Buffet/Beach Boy mix and imagine myself sitting under the stars.

***Question for the comments…Do you like to go to outdoor concerts? If yes, what is the best concert you ever saw outside? If no, why not?

  1. Love me some Buffett! Jimmy, not Warren. When it comes to camping, yeah, I’m right there with ya sister. Actually I’m not there. I can do without cable, but I need a REAL bathroom not some hole in the ground. Remember my European experience$ 🤣😬😒
I can totally get behind sitting at an outdoor bar, chill in with a yummy drink. Sea Breeze, anyone? It might be too early for your (and me) to imbibe, but we know who would it 7:30 a.m….

  3. When you mentioned Merriweather pavilion I automatically thought of the shell on the lawn…steel pulse, black ohuru…there use to be a concert called waikiki bash every year and it feature all the top hawaiian bands ….I’m up for some buffet at the shell but I don’t know about hitting the lawn…but there’s seats up in the front…your not allowed personal chairs on the lawn so that would be a little ruff me!!!
