It’s Prom Season!!!

Pictures are starting to pop up all over my social media feeds…parents are posting pics of their kids going to the prom. How did it get to be May already? It feels like only yesterday we were talking about the New Year and what we were going to do and all of a sudden…bam…girls in dresses, boys in tuxedos and limos everywhere, time is going so fast.

Do you remember your prom? Who did you go with? What color dress did you wear? Did you wear a full tuxedo, or did you change it up a bit? Limo or did your parents drive you? Extra bonus points if you remember your prom theme!!!

My prom experience was a little crazy. I was dating this guy, Jeff, and we broke up shortly before prom, but decided to go together anyway, because, frankly, it was too late to find anyone else. We went to different high schools and our proms were the same weekend, mine on Friday and his on Saturday. It was a long, long weekend.

I went to a small private school with a lot of rich kids, I wasn’t one of them, lol. There were tons of pre and post prom activities. Jeff picked me up in his dad’s car, he got to drive the fancy car for the night. We went to a pre prom “cocktail” party by the pool at Sandy’s house. Then we hit the prom. He didn’t know anyone at my high school and even though my friends tried to make him feel welcome, he was acting like a little bit of a jerk. I wore a teal dress, and his tie and cummerbund were the same color. The theme was, “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing…I think this was everyone’s prom theme that year, 1988. I had a great time, despite Mr. Killjoy trying to ruin the vibe. After the prom we hit Tony’s house for a party…alcohol may have been consumed, that’s all I’m saying. After that, we went on to Kristen’s house for breakfast. My graduating class was 88 people only, so imagine these parents setting up food for over 100 people. Like I said, I went to the rich kid school. Later that afternoon, Jenn was having a pool party, but we didn’t go, because we had to go get some sleep for Jeff’s prom that night.

After getting some sleep, Jeff came around with his friends to pick me up in a limo. No pre prom action, just straight to the prom. Now, because he had a “bad” time at my prom, he thought I was going to feel out of place and not enjoy myself…WRONG!!! I met Jeff through a friend at youth group and I guess he forgot the fact that most of my church friends went to his high school. As soon as we got there, he kind of went off with his friends thinking I would be sitting at the table by myself. Well, nobody puts Baby in the corner, I was out there dancing all night with my friends, and he came around looking for me. I think I was having a better time than he was. After prom we went to a party with his friends.

I was ready to call it a night, but Jeff didn’t want to leave. His friend, Lake, had to drop off his date, so I hopped into the limo with them, and Lake would drop me off after his date. They were just friends, so I wasn’t spoiling some late-night limo action. We dropped her off and decided to drop off Lake first, then me, only to make it easier on the driver to get back to the party. We got to Lake’s house and his mother was outside waiting on us. Apparently, Jeff had called my mom to ask her to send the limo back to the party after I got home. My mother got hysterical, what mother wouldn’t, when she heard the story. So, here is my mom all upset, thinking the worst and my brother hops in his car to go looking for us, with a baseball bat. (Donnie, am I correct, or is my memory fading?) Of course, while all this drama was going on, Lake and I had gone on a little joyride. I got home fine, my mother calmed down and my brother never used the bat.

All in all, I had a great prom weekend. I’m glad that I decided to go, because at first, I wasn’t planning on it. I was going to play it too cool for school and I would have missed out on the time of my life. OMG, I just realized that was 34 years ago. I’m glad I remember it all.

***Question for the comments…Did you go to the prom? Who was your date and what was your prom theme?

  1. Lol! 1981…my dress was cranberry. On one shoulder was 3 small diagonal straps and one thicker strap on the other. It had a wrap that I could tie. Derrick wore a gray tux. We took Daddy’s car because EVERYBODY took Daddy’s car. Neighbors used it for their kids’ weddings…but I digress.
The theme was “The Best of Times”. It was boring and Derrick and I didn’t do anything after, really. The next day everybody went to Great Adventure. Our next door neighbor was running for town council and said she would buy us a couple of bottles of champagne and pizza if I, her daughter, and her daughter’s boyfriend would stay home and stuff envelopes. I’m always up for the bubbly (and Tracie knows this), so it was no biggie. Other substances may have been consumed, but I cannot remember in public. FUN,FUN,FUN!!!
