Words Matter!!!

How do you feel about positive quotes and affirmations? Do you think they are silly? Do you think they work? Do you think they are a necessary part of your day? Do you roll your eyes when someone mentions them? I love affirmations and positive quotes. I have been into them for a long time.

I have always loved a good quote. Especially ones that give a positive outlook on life. It all started by my love of reading books. I would read a sentence that would grab me, or someone would quote someone famous and if it made me feel good or if it was thought provoking, I would underline it or highlight it. I think books are interactive, so I have always written in my books. (My sister would disagree with my “defacing” a book with my scribbling, but I find it helpful)

I remember back in the early 2000’s, I don’t remember the exact year, I was working at The Olive Garden. It was my first serving job and the place wasn’t always run in the best way. It was very stressful, and I found myself becoming very negative while working. I was working a double and was on break, eating lunch in an empty section when one of my coworkers came and sat down next to me. He opened his serving book and a page fell out. I picked it up and glanced at it while I handed it back to him. I asked what it was, and he told me it was his quotes and affirmations. He always had it with him at work and when the place got out of hand between staff and guests, he would open his book and read a few of them and it made him feel better. Interesting idea…I decided to give it a shot. I took a piece of my order pad and wrote down some of my favorite sayings and took a couple from his paper and kept it in my book. Before every shift, I would take it out and read through them and it helped keep me focused and in a good mood.

I haven’t always done this. I stopped working at The OG and my paper got lost when I dumped my server notebook. For a LONG time after that I went back to my old ways of being a negative nelly, which is crazy, because most of the time growing up, I was a happy, positive kid. It was really only when I was at work that the negative beast reared its ugly head. The moment I walked out the door…I was Sally Sunshine again. (Well, for the most part anyway, lol) I knew I had to get back in the habit again of keeping my thoughts positive when in a negative situation. It was time to make another list of affirmations and quotes.

When I started going back to church and reading my bible, I found all sorts of great verses that fit right in with what I was looking for. All throughout the bible there are great sayings to live by from Genesis to Revelation. In Philippians it says, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” That, my friends, is very powerful. Psalm 27:1 says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid.” Absolutely!!!!!

Do you find yourself letting the world get you down? Do you find that you are doubting yourself? Maybe you’re in a little funk and don’t quite know how to get out of it…I would suggest going to our friend Google and looking up some positive quotes and affirmations to read through. I won’t tell you to go read the bible if you are not into it, but if you think it may be for you, go for it, it will totally change your life. A little positive in a big bunch of negative goes a long way.

  1. YES words matter! So does spelling, grammar, usage, punctuation…but I digress. As one of the most negative people (if left to my own devices…shut up Donnie! 😁), I really love a good quote, especially if it shuts some moron down. Ok, I digress again. I love me some affirmations. I’m not into the lovey-dovey, hearts and flowers saccharine ones. The Vulcan in me rejects that nonsense. That being said, to me positive doesn’t necessarily mean hippy-dippy. It’s an in your face, straight-up saying that’s basically Cher saying, “Snap out of it!”
