Happy Birthday to You…

O.k. gang today is my birthday, but I am curious to know how you celebrate your big day. Do you just let it go by like any other day? Do you have a big blow out every year? Are you one of those that thinks your birthday equals a whole month of celebrating?

I am the type that likes to spend my birthday hanging out with friends, but it does not need to be a huge thing. Usually, Neil and I will go out to breakfast and then take a drive around the island stopping for shave ice along the way. Probably no drive today…gas prices…but our friend James is playing music tonight, so we will go have dinner and watch him play. I am just glad that after 2 years I can go out and celebrate my birthday.

Like I said, I do not need a lot of hoopla on my day, but some things are a must. I need to go out for a good cup of coffee. If I get into Waikiki today, you know where I am going, my favorite spot that I blogged about recently. If not, there are a few other choices I can pick from. Another must is some sort of yummy dessert. I do not need a cake with candles and the birthday song, but I do need some sort of sugary frosted treat. That’s it, that is all I need to have a good birthday.

Don’t get me wrong, I love to have all my friends sending me good cheer through phone calls, text and social media. My family is 6 hours ahead of me so my first happy birthday came in around 6 p.m. yesterday from my sister. As soon as it hit midnight her time the text came in. The next greeting came at 10 p.m. my time ( 4 a.m. their time ) from my brother. I woke up this morning to find all sorts of good wishes from my east coast friends back home and more will be rolling in as my Hawaii friends wake up and get going. O.k., so maybe I do like a little bit of a big deal to be made to honor the day of my birth, LOL.

I am trying to remember the best birthday I had as a kid. I really don’t know which one it was, but I do remember…I think I was about 8 and I had a little birthday party at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor with some friends. My parents ordered the zoo. It was a huge sundae, enough for everybody to eat. It was brought out by a bunch of servers making noise and cheering. Thinking back now, I feel for those servers having to do that several times a day. One of the worst things about being a server is trying to get enough people to sing happy birthday when requested. As soon as you hit the kitchen to ask for singers, it becomes a ghost town…they all flee. Somewhere I have a picture of me and that sundae.

As we get older some people will tell you that their birthday doesn’t mean that much anymore. I think that is sad; we should never get too old to celebrate. It is your day, embrace it and have a good time. Even if I was alone today, I would still do a little something for myself. It is what keeps us young…well maybe not by age, but in heart. Even if I live to be 100, I will continue to celebrate every year. I will always want that fancy coffee drink and dessert. I guess that is the Peter Pan in me, because I will never grow up; I will never stop being a kid at heart and I will never let the celebration stop.

Hi, I'm Tracie. I am a writer, reader, life coach, lover of the city and the beach. I am a big fan of all things caffeinated. I dig things from many different decades, but am a definite child of the 80's. My blog is about everything and anything my mind conjures up. Enjoy the ride.

  1. I was going to text you at midnight your time, too,but for once in a month I had a decent night’s sleep. We know someone who insists on celebrating her bday all month. It was annoying as a kid and I’m glad I don’t have to put up with it now.
As for me, I remember the 1st bday after you left. They took me to
Chili’s and I said several times, “no singing or I’m leaving.” They came, they started to sing, I left. A sweet dessert is a must, but I REFUSE to cook on my bday. I’d rather have Chicken Holiday than cook. As much as I love to cook, it’s still a chore. No cooking and no housework! Happy Birthday! I remember when you were born!!!😁

  2. Happy orbit day! I’ve through cycles with mine. Many times I’m okay with just staying in and getting greetings via social media. There have ben several years recently that I celebrated by going to volunteer. It was out of state and I’d spend the week there. Last year I decided to take myself out to a favorite restaurant and I had a great time. I do think it’s important that we celebrate in some fashion. After all, the world wouldn’t be the same if we weren’t in it β™₯
