I Wanna Bang on My Drums All Day…

Let me tell you up front that I am not blessed with musical talent. I do not have a good ear for pitch or tone or whatever else you need to make the music sound good. Don’t get me wrong, I can sing a little bit. Animals don’t start howling when I open my mouth to belt out a tune, but you don’t want to hand me a microphone. Unless of course it is karaoke night, I have had a couple of drinks and you want to laugh. By then I am laughing too, so all is well.

I would love to be able to play an instrument. I never wanted to in school. When other friends were bringing home the flute or clarinet to practice, I just didn’t have any interest. I wish it would have been a requirement, I think it is easier to learn things as a kid.

I’m thinking about this now because Neil has been talking about bringing out his trumpet and getting it back in working order. He is very talented. He plays the guitar and can sing all the various parts and harmonies of any song. I can listen to him strum and sing all day long. (No, I am not just saying that because we are together, Lol) But he played a mean trumpet in school and got a full college scholarship because of it. I have never heard him play it, but I am looking forward to it.

I have tried a few things over the years. I bought a guitar and an ukulele, but I do not have the hand coordination. I have tried to sing in the choir and on the worship team at church, but I am better off singing in the shower. I bought a Kalimba thumb piano. I figured it was small and the notes are right there on the keys, so it should be easier to learn, but I would be lost if I ever needed to tune it, because like I said, I have no ear. I thought all was lost. I thought I was just doomed to never play an instrument until I bought something I have always wanted…bongos.

All my life I have wanted a pair of bongos or a conga drum. I have wanted them ever since I saw James Darren a.k.a. Moondoggie playing them in “Gidget Goes Hawaiian” And then I kept seeing them in other old beach movies and knew one day I would own a set. The day finally came a little over a year ago. We were at the music store because Neil was picking something up and I wandered over to the percussion section. I saw bongos on sale and the next thing you knew, they were coming home with me.

I love them. Do I know if I am playing them “correctly”? No, but I do not care. I just turn on my music, hit shuffle and whatever comes on I just jam with sitting in my apartment. Doesn’t matter what song, it could be Green Day, Frank Sinatra or The Bangles, I just play. I think it sounds pretty good and that is all that matters. I have played a few times at church with the worship team. But I am shy about that because I don’t want to throw off the other people playing. It’s o.k. though. The point is that I bought them, and I am playing them. I am totally content just sitting in my place singing to myself and banging on my drums all day.

***Question for the comments…Do you play a musical instrument or sing? If yes, what do you play? If no, have you ever wanted it and what would it be?

  1. Played trumpet in junior high school. Got with the F.rinks brothers, one played sax, the other also trumpet. They were good. Me not so. They had it in mind they could help me play better. Nope. Church scores all had diamond-shaped noteheads instead of round ones. Threw me off. Then I discovered high school sports. Also working around a school schedule. End of music career. Wish otherwise? Sure but I play a mean CD and can play anything you like, jazz, classical, old/new/classic rock, blues, country, and big band. Good you’re banging-away on the bongos. Rock-on sister!

    1. I gotta remember when we go palolo to put them in the van. One day we will jam. You really should try to learn piano, I think as a musician already it might come easier for you.
