Where Have all the Sitcoms Gone?

I watch a lot of things on stream these days. I can’t tell you the last time I actually turned on the television to watch an actual channel. But I have noticed a pattern in the past 20 years or so…the demise of the comedy sitcom. Are they still out there?

I remember growing up and sitting in front of the television on any given night and watching 2 hours of comedy fun and then 1 hour of a drama series. But now it seems rare to have a whole block of funny, laugh out loud shows. It’s been replaced by cop shows, baking competitions and “reality” t.v.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good cop show. Anybody remember “Homicide, Life on the Street”? It was set in Baltimore and in my humble opinion it was the best cop show ever. I like “Law and Order”, “Criminal Intent” was my favorite, because the character played by Vincent D’Onofrio was an odd ball who got the job done. But to sit there for hours watching just cop shows is a little too much for me. I mean, I can sit for days watching mafia movies, but that is for a different post.

But what happened to shows like “Taxi”, “One Day at a Time” (the original, not the remake), “Three’s Company”, “The Cosby Show”…you get my point. These shows used to reign supreme between the 8-10 time slot almost every night of the week. Now, I hardly hear about those type of shows anymore. Now it seems to be all cop and medical shows. Once again, I like a good medical show, “E.R.” was my go to every Thursday night after watching “Friends”, “Seinfeld” and “Mad About You”.

Don’t even get me started on cooking competitions…o.k. too late, I’m started. Why does everything have to be a competition? I miss the days when you could watch someone just cook for 30 minutes and be entertaining. Yes, I like a few of them. I used to watch “Chopped” with my sister and we would try to come up with our own ideas for the ingredients given. “Iron Chef” was another favorite, but why does everything have to be this now?

And don’t forget “Reality” television, like they are ever going to let you forget. Every time I turn around there seems to be a new race starting or a real housewives type of thing on. When these shows first started, it was fun to watch, but what’s next, “The Real Amish Housewives of Pennsylvania”? What would that be like? Watching them churn butter or mending a button? I am sure it would be a big hit. Maybe they already made it and I never noticed. I will admit it, I did enjoy watching “Mob Wives” and a few episodes of “The Osbournes”…but come on…it’s Ozzy, I had to.

What is the whole point to my rant? I really don’t know if I have one. I just miss the days of classic funny television. It’s kind of like “Saturday Night Live” through the years. You can go through seasons of absolute genius, where you would tune in every Saturday night to see the best sketch comedy, but then things change, and you realize you haven’t watched a whole show for 10 years or more because it doesn’t make you laugh anymore. I guess I will continue to just stream things, until someone tells me something is funny on the actual television, and I give it another chance. In the meantime, you can find me on my phone, tablet or computer. I am currently watching “Seinfeld”.

***Question for the comments…What is your favorite comedy show ever? Do you like reality, competition and cop shows? And what is your favorite one of those?

Hi, I'm Tracie. I am a writer, reader, life coach, lover of the city and the beach. I am a big fan of all things caffeinated. I dig things from many different decades, but am a definite child of the 80's. My blog is about everything and anything my mind conjures up. Enjoy the ride.

  1. Ikr? Thursday night is 3 Law and Orders in a row! I’m not complaining about that necessarily, but I miss a good sitcom. Chopped was fun, for a while. I always came up with my own stuff. Have you noticed that they run marathons of these shows? Like in Food Network, every Friday is Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, ALL DAY. Same thing for the “Real” Housewives. Real housewives my butt. I’ll lay 10 to 1 not one of them had never cleaned a toilet.
Let me be “philosopical” for a minute. Society follows TV. People were not as tense and doom and gloom in the days of sitcoms. They allowed people to laugh and release tension. Now all of these dramas and even the contest shows are made to fill people with tension, even angst. What’s the purpose of that? That was either a great insight or the rest if the flu talking.
If you want to watch a good sitcom, it’s always “Andy Griffith” somewhere

    1. You are right. Without the release of tension through laughter, things are worse as a whole. I think we deal with things better when we can laugh. It wasnt the flu talking. And yes, I think Andy is on 24/7 somewhere. That’s right up there with it’s 5 o’clock somewhere, lol

  2. I love sitcoms. “Ghosts,” on CBS is pretty funny, in a cute way. I do have to agree with you that there are not many good sitcoms out there. “B Positive,” also on CBS is funny. I miss, “Mom.” I love police/legal procedurals. So, I’m all over that “Law & Order,” trifecta. I also loved, “Criminal Intent.” The 90’s had great sitcoms: “Fraser,” “Seinfeld,” “Mad About You,” were all brilliant. “Friends,” was good, but not cerebral, plus ROSS WAS NOT AN ANTHROPOLOGIST. He was a paleontologist. I won’t forgive them for that major mistake.

  3. Yes…they don’t make shows like they use to…clean fun comedy no swearing and heartfelt family dramas…here’s my list: all in the family, the jeffersons, good times, everybody loves Raymond, Gilligan’s island, happy days, the Beverly hillbillies, green acres…then you had the Waltons, little house on the Prarie, bonanza, Gunsmoke, kojack, barrette, strasky and hutch, taxi…before Saturday night live you couldn’t beat I love Lucy or the carol Burnette show…couldn’t choose one…currently going through 9 seasons of science on netflix…just about done

  4. Tis the generation. More concerned with the Karbashians, Some Country Has Talent, Real Cops/Housewives/House Flippers, and Celebrity Mindless Challenges. Desperately looking for life as they have none.

      1. ME TV. Open air. Not available everywhere. Andy Griffith, Gomer Pyle, Green Acres, Hogan’s Heroes, Old coboy stuff, and more. Commercials? Sure. You can time trips to the toilet and refrigerator.

  5. I’m like you- I’ve noticed the shortage of good sitcoms too and it’s sad. I also enjoy a good cop show but there’s something special about a good sitcom. My favorites are old sitcoms like “Sanford and Son,” “Good Times,” “All in the Family,” “Mama’s Family,” and “Gimme a Break.” Oh, how I miss those days!
