Daily Routines…Do You Have One?

I was listening to The Beatles the other day and the song “A Day in the Life” came on. I love this song and a certain part of the lyrics hit me and it made me start to wonder…

“Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head. Found my way downstairs and drank a cup and looking up I noticed I was late. Found my coat and grabbed my hat, made the bus in seconds flat…” copyright by Lennon/McCartney 1967.

It made me wonder how many people have a daily routine and how many people just go through life without any rhyme or reason to their day. You would think I would be one of those no rhyme or reason people because of the whole squiggle line thing, but surprisingly, no I am not. I have a daily to do list that I try to follow. I don’t have to do it in any particular order and if certain things don’t get done, well, that’s ok because sometimes the day does get away from me. Sometimes Neil will take off of work or my sister and I get into one of our marathon conversations that covers everything from religion to if you morph Emilio Estevez and Charlin Sheen together, you get Martin Sheen. If this happens, and it happens quite a bit, I get right back into the groove and try to accomplish the most important things.

Some of my daily to do’s include my daily devotions, which is non-negotiable, first thing every morning. I check my social media and respond to people and post a couple of things. That is also a thing that gets done daily no matter what. Since I have the blog and am an independent consultant with my company networking is a big thing and really a big part of my jobs. Besides, I love to see what everyone is up to and looking at all the things, so you can just call me a social butterfly, LOL.

I also try to read and write daily. I switch back and forth between fiction and non-fiction and my goal is to read 52 books a year. I am usually reading 3 different books at the same time and pick up whatever I am in the mood for. Eventually they all get read. My daily writing could be anything from the blog to a journal entry to a writing prompt I found on Pinterest. I am currently in the middle of what I am hoping turns into a self-published E-book on Amazon, stay tuned.

I am usually listening to a podcast or two throughout the day as well. I am really into learning new things and personal development and have a few people I listen to weekly. So, when one of their podcasts is new, it goes on that day’s list.

Let’s not forget about exercise, I mean I wish I could but…I write it down daily, but this is the one that gets left off the list most. I really have to do better, even if I just go take a nice walk…hmmm…something to work on.

Anyway, those are most of the things that make up my daily routine. I try to make sure they all get done, even on the weekends. Most of the time it works in my favor, but even on the days it doesn’t that’s ok, because while I believe you need some structure in life, sometimes you need to have a Ferris Bueller day where you sneak away from the daily routine and go dance on a parade float.

  1. Yup! I’m right there with you sister! And for those of you reading my comment, that Emilio/Charlie/Martin conversation was just the other day! I write my list (btw started using the you-know-what) planner again -somewhat. The anal retentive sister is now trying to be “come what may”. I have my non-negotiables and that list shrinks by the day, which I’m totally fine with.

  2. Haha on the Beatles song. (Confession Iā€™m not a huge Beatles fan) but I sang that song so many mornings when I was running late. As for daily routine, praying and daily devotional first thing! Workout daily. Like you, those are non negotiable! The rest is work related. Always give thanks. Every single day!

  3. Not sure that I ever really looked at my daily as a list of “To Do’s”. Well at least not in many, many years. I remember a long time ago I was struggling with a list of “should’s” and a wise friend told me to STOP it! My life and my relationship with God is not dependent on should. I took that to heart, maybe too much so. But regardless, I did learn that I feel much better about myself and my life having thrown out the list. I suppose though that if one were to peer into my daily, they would see a routine of sorts – LOL Kindness being something that is both constant and a work in progress.

    1. Kindness, that’s a good one. A list is really just the things you do every day. There are totally days when only one thing gets done and days it all gets done. My list keeps me in check or I would Netflix and chill all day, LOL

    1. I knew you would be, I would think your job would play a big part of that, but I’m thinking you were always a routine kinda girl. I keep hearing about this wordle thing and seeing all sorts of weird block patterns…is it a game? I dont think I can go down another game rabbit hole…

  4. 4:15 am alarm
    5 minute snooze it till 4:30am faithfully
    wash up
    Make coffee (3 kurig cups)
    At the same time I’ve recently added making a morning shake (Arbone)
    Which consist of 2 scoops arbone 1 cup tri berry fruits (frozen), a table spoon peanut butter, and Almond milk…I enjoy this healthy meal replacement with my devotions…
    5:30 I leave home…earbuds on with worship music
    5:55 I park my car at work continue to worship till 6:10
    When I get in the office everything changes and I get things done as they come…
    My weekly schedule
    Sunday Church
    Monday see Jana
    Tuesday palolo
    Wednesday worship
    Thursday hawaiian music
    Friday date night with Jana
    Saturday palolo

    I guess I’m schedule orientated

  5. Monday through Saturday
    1. Start coffee
    2. Take Rocky for morning walk.
    3. Go out on lanai and drink coffee, read Bible, pray, eat breakfast (usually melon), read email.
    4. Decide what I need or want to do for the day.
    5. Noon walk Rocky (he keeps me on a schedule)
    6. 4 o’clock feed Rocky.
    7. 5 to 5:30 walk to Kapiolani Beach park to watch sunset and give thanks to God for everything the day has brought my way.
    8. Eat, watch Tv, play video games and of course walk Rocky.
    Sunday I start with 1 and 2 above and then go to church. Rock’s routine is pretty much the same. Sometimes go to the Zoo in the afternoon. Sometimes go to Denny’s and eat.
