Come on…Tell Me What You’re Listening To

You know you have them…certain songs that you only listen to alone when no one is around, because you think people will song shame you. Maybe you dance around your bedroom, cry in a corner or sing at the top of your lungs in the car with the windows up, everyone has them, you’re not alone. Not me though, my musical tastes are out there for the world to see, and I don’t care who knows it, LOL!

This topic came to me the other day because of a conversation in the car with Neil. We were talking about The Beatles and if John Lennon had lived would his music have changed with the times like Paul McCartney’s did. I said yes, he wasn’t so sure. Anyway, it reminded me of Paul’s duet with Michael Jackson “Say, Say, Say”. So, I immediately went home to watch the video on You Tube, which sent me down the McCartney rabbit hole. He made a movie in 1984 called “Give My Regards to Broad Street”…it’s a bad movie, it really is, but I love it. I actually found it that day on You Tube and watched it laughing at how bad it still is and still loving it all the same. But not everyone is like me.

If you were to look at my library on Napster, you would find thousands of songs that if you hit shuffle and play would make absolutely no sense and you would laugh at my choices. Yesterday, I did that just to see what came up. The first five artists on my hit parade were: The Cure, Barbra Streisand, the soundtrack to Godspell, Green Day and Shaun Cassidy. Quite the mix, I know, and some of you are currently laughing at my choices…that’s o.k. Further on in my musical day I heard songs like “Harper Valley, PTA” by Jeannie C. Reilly, “Keep On” by The Brady Bunch (yeah, I said it) and one of my all-time favorites…”Seasons in the Sun” by Terry Jacks. Not everyone’s first or last choices when they think of music, but there they are on Tracie’s wall of sound, waiting to be played and sung along to with no shame.

So, now I have to ask…what are you listening to that you don’t want people to know? Are you a secret fan of The Spice Girls? Are you normally a mellow person who listens to hard core punk? A man in his 50’s listening to the boy bands of the 90’s? Are you the only one of your friends who listens to country? Are you the shy quiet girl listening to gangsta rap? It’s o.k. you know…don’t hide your music anymore. If your friends and family laugh at your choices, who cares…just remember…they are probably hiding the fact they love disco from you.

I say play the music you love and don’t be ashamed anymore. Be like me…Hello, my name is Tracie Sulpazo and I love The Spice Girls, Bing Crosby, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Barry Manilow and you don’t like it…whatevers…not everybody can be cool like me, LOL.

***Question for the comments…Do you have a band or song you don’t want anyone to know you listen to? Why don’t you want them to know? Tell me what it is.

Hi, I'm Tracie. I am a writer, reader, life coach, lover of the city and the beach. I am a big fan of all things caffeinated. I dig things from many different decades, but am a definite child of the 80's. My blog is about everything and anything my mind conjures up. Enjoy the ride.

  1. As you know my favorite music is hawaiian…I didn’t realize this until recently when Chris and I were listening to some slack key artist that he liked and would like to learn that when I heard all the songs I knew exactly who they were that was playing…Chris was impressed but I didn’t think much about it cause I grew up in it…you know it’s weird knowing that I’m a semi musician and I drive around without a radio in my car…it’s been like that for years…the funny thing is I like a lot of music but I don’t know a lot of the artist that sing it…hahaha I know that might be a little irritating for you and Neil but it’s true…or I might like a certain band and if you were to ask me what they sing I might only know a song or two if I’m lucky…sad to say if I was more interested in music bands, groups or songs like you Tracie, I think about how much better of a musician I could really be…I love country don’t play much country songs but they’re structured like hawaiian songs…growing up my grandfather had one of those real to real things and he use to listen to big band music I love that stuff, he also listen to a group called the 4 amigos…what is that mariachi type music fabulous guitar picking…that big band sound with the horns though is probably why I like earth wind and fire…now that I have ear buds I listen while I drive it’s been Christian and gospel music…trying to pick up song to learn for our worship…not ashamed at all of any of the music I listen to…

    1. Its true… you do know more music than I give you credit for. Neil listens to a lot of different music too, you have to if you’re a musician. Dont worry about who is who and who songs what. But I better hear some mariachi music playing from the speakers in palolo the next time we hang out 🙂🤙

  2. I seem to remember someone standing up at the beach and saying,
“I’m a Barry Manilow fan and I’m proud of it!” For me it’s Queen as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be…” Other stuff…ghey oldies! All-time favorite song? “Hello it’s me” – Todd Rundgren. I have too many to list

    1. If I did, I wouldn’t be dumb enough to put it here! But let’s say this, it’s infinitely better than Seasons in the Sun! No it’s not. It’s just as bad. Well, there are 2. One is Rocky NY Austin Roberts (it is MY Seasons in the Sun) and Shannon by Henry Gross. There! Now you know my shame.😳

  3. Haha. You are so funny Tracie! I am not ashamed of any music that I like and listen to either. My tastes are quite eclectic as well, from Handel, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Mozart to Latin pop, to Irish pub house rock, definitely new country and old country, 80’s rock to new Christian, and now really enjoying Hawaiian like Willie K & Hapa. Also, show tunes from Singing in the Rain to Phantom of the Opera. A couple years back, I made a playlist called Alissa’s Famous Favs pulling from 6 decades … from Sugar, Sugar to Justin Timberlake … my favorite from that list … Love will keep us Together by Captain & Tenille 🤣

    1. I love it!!!! I have a playlist like that as well and of course Captain and Tenille are on there. I actually met the Captain once. He stayed at the hotel in Baltimore that I worked at. And yes…he was wearing the hat. 😁
