Social Media: Love It or Hate…We Gotta Have It

I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I love talking to people and connecting with friends I haven’t seen in a million years. I like looking at all the pretty pictures the influencers take the time to put together…the things they come up with are amazing.

I have been on social media for a long time now. My first ever social media friend was a man named Tom…lol everyone’s first friend on My Space was a guy named Tom, duh, cuz he was the creator of My Space and as soon as you finished signing up, there he was and you were like, yay, a friend! LOL!!! Social media has come a long was since then.

Now there’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat, Tic Tok, Linked In, Pinterest and who knows how many more. Don’t let me on Pinterest, because I can go down a rabbit hole and be on there for hours looking up just about anything my squiggle line mind can think up. But, then again, that’s what we do, spend a lot of time scrolling through all of the different platforms. It’s just the thing to do.

I used to be a casual poster. Every so often I would post a picture, a cute quote or let the world know what was on my mind. I even got really creative getting all the things I needed to say in 140 characters or less (awww Twitter). But not anymore…and this is where the hate comes in….well, maybe dislike is a better word.

I am working from home these days trying to get a few things off the ground and social media is playing a big part in the promotion of these things. All the advice I have been given in this area is to post post and post some more….pictures, reels, snaps, stories, lives, content, content, content multiple times a day. People even put out books and articles about how to make the perfect post and give you content calendar ideas so you never run out of things to post…my mind wants to explode.

So, everyday I sit and try to think of things to post. I don’t want to be boring, but I don’t want to overwhelm people either….”oh no, something else from Tracie…” It’s funny, I have friends in business that post all day and they make it look so easy and I love looking at all of it and I comment and like, but I feel if I do that then its annoying. And don’t even get me started about the likes, comments and shares and all the how to boost the algorithms in your favor advice….wasn’t social media made to be fun?

I was listening to someone today talk about going live on social to get a following for your brand to boost your sales and readers. Never have I been able to click the live button and talk to the audience that lives inside my phone. If you know me, you’re probably thinking I’m nuts because I am chatterbox, but nope I freeze at the idea of it.

But social media is here to stay and I guess I will continue to muddle though all it has to offer…actually go live, post more selfies (I hate hate hate taking pictures of myself)–but people seem to like them when I do it. So, if you see me pop up in your feed, please throw this old dog a bone and give me a like and a comment; I’m going to try to learn some new tricks. I mean, come on, we’re all friends out there in social land, thanks to My Space Tom!!!!

***Questions for the comments… Do you like social media? Do you use it for business or fun or both? What’s the hardest thing you find about using social media?

***Please subscribe, like, comment and share with a friend. Thanks for being here.

  1. Ahhh social media, where would we be without it? I guess my first true foray into it was via FB, and I do have IG and even twitter. In the beginning it was a way to connect mostly with family from all over the US. Then I connected with real life friends, and then the games – oh the games (Farmville anyone). But a funny thing happened along the way, and those internet friends became real life friends too. I have never been one to post personal stuff, but at the same time I will appreciate when others do. I love having my page as one of maybe some thought provoking stuff and a whole lot of humor. The downside to any of the platforms though really is the ugly side of humanity. oh right, that’s called sin. The past few years sure brought that into focus for myself and a lot of others I know. So even in the darkness of social media, there’s a bright light showing us a better way.

  2. Just do your thing and let the algorithm do it’s thing! Keep posting 😇

I’m so done with anything Zuck created. Happy to have deleted it all.
    TikTok is my new jam😅
Let me tell you though, you need a timer when you’re in there cuz you can scroll into the next hour in no time!

  3. Aloha T.K. yah your in this thing deep social media…it’s like a double edge sword for me…as you know I’m currently not on it even though my accounts are still active…in fact I’m trying to get back on Instagram but forgot the name I used hahaha. For me it’s a big distraction especially at work, I see employees on it all day and I have to constantly remind them to put their phones away especially when you deal with heavy equipment it’s absolutely for safety reasons…it makes me be the asshole at work…I can’t see myself sitting and thinking of things to be creative about so when I post I’m not boring…for you don’t think so much…just share from your heart! Those are the best!!!
