T.V. Bingeing & Chill…Watcha Watching?

O.k. gang, let’s play a little do you remember? Do you remember when we had to watch a t.v. show on the day it aired and if you missed it, you had to wait until the summer to hopefully catch the rerun? But then came the VCR and you could put a tape in a machine and record your show. Then TIVO came out as the original digital recording device, you could tape multiple shows at the same time!! And now here we are with all the streaming apps we can handle–Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, HBO Max, etc, etc, etc….

Now, you don’t even have to wait; most of the time when they drop a season it’s the whole thing. So you grab a drink and a few snacks and binge the whole thing. You stay up late to watch “just one more episode” (LOL) or spend days in a row in front of the t.v. until it’s done AND then it’s on to the next.

I am totally guilty of this binge t.v. trend (actually, no longer a trend; it’s here to stay) But what am I watching? I find myself watching shows I’ve already seen before, but haven’t watched in a while. Or, I’ve come late to a particular show after it’s been off the air for awhile. and then it’s catch up time. Perfect example is Gilmore Girls. Never saw it during it’s original run, only came across it a few years ago on Netflix and yes…I binged it and got my sister to do it too.

Currently, I am bingeing Friends. I just got HBO Max and decided to watch all the way through before I got to the reunion show. This is one show I was in front of the t.v. for every Thursday night for 10 years. They were my age, living in New York City…of course I watched it!

Another one of my binge shows is The Sopranos. I came a few weeks late to that party, but was able to catch up quickly, because a friend was wise enough to tape it from the beginning. If I can’t find something else to watch….bada bing…there it is in all it’s italian american mob glory.

I confess I have a problem with t.v.= hello, my name is Tracie and I can be a tv-aholic. So many shows, so little time…MASH, Family Ties, Ally McBeal…the list goes on and on and on. I really don’t watch that much new t.v. anymore , so NO, I did not watch Tiger King…and I won’t.

In “You Got Mail” Greg Kinnear’s character said, “The whole idea of the VCR is that it makes it possible for you to tape what’s on television while you’re out of the house. But, the whole point of being out of the house is so you can miss what’s on television.”

MIND BLOWN!! We did use to leave the house to get away from the box in the living room with the talking pictures on it, but those days are long gone. Now we can leave the house with a whole multimedia studio in our pocket. How I long for those simpler times before media took over the world–those were the days…

Shoots, now I have All in the Family stuck in my head…o.k. forget what I just said. I have to grab a drink and a snack….gotta binge Archie, Edith, Gloria and Meathead!!

***Question for the comments…Do you binge television like I do? What is your favorite show to watch over and over again? And what are you bingeing right now? ***

  1. Ha! At the moment Sex and the City. Then back to the Sopranos. Then Gilmore Girls, The CHOSEN, and Boston Legal (if I can find it). I already told Me there will be NO Tiger King Season 2…

  2. So a funny thing has happened…Once I got rid of cable (I was a late comer to the streaming game), I initially did a lot of binge watching. But now 2 years later, I can go for days, yes days and never turn my TV on. Crazy right? I find that I don’t even stress when I miss current episodes of current TV series, such as the Chicago series. Now mind you, I was the person had had her TV on pretty much 24/7, I’d even fall asleep to it. Now, eh, I really don’t care all that much.

  3. This post made me laugh so hard!! Especially this line: Do you remember when we had to watch a t.v. show on the day it aired and if you missed it, you had to wait until the summer to hopefully catch the rerun?
How hilarious and oh so true!
Our TV broke one summer and my parents never got another one so I got out of the habit of watching tv until I had kids!
I still don’t watch that much but move out the way when I hear “doom doom” I’m running to watch Law & Order and I don’t want to miss the crime….or Briscoe’s one liner.
    Great post Tracie!

  5. It is fascinating how viewing entertainment has changed. Great memories of times gone by. Thanks for the reminder. I’m not much of a binger but have run off to the library to watch all of Friends and Big Bang Theory or rewatch 24. I have used Netflix to watch familiar shows like Frazier and Glee, and find obscure ones like Haven, the Great British Baking Show and now streaming shows one day right after the next of the Queen’s Gambit, The Spy and The Woods (Polish series). So fun!
