Picture it…New Jersey, August 10, 2012…I say goodbye to my sister and brother-in-law, hop onto an airport shuttle and head to Philly International Airport with a small suitcase and a backpack…destination…Honolulu, Hawaii. Reason? Decided on a whim to move.
When I tell people this I get all sorts of questions and comments: 1. Oh, wow, you’re so brave! 2. What made you decide to do that? 3. Did you always want to live in Hawaii?
My answers…1. No, not brave, we moved around a lot when I was a kid, so no big deal 2. I have no idea what made me decide 3. No, Hawaii was never on my radar as a place to live or visit. Now you’re thinking–Ummmm, Ok Tracie, then what are you doing there? My answer…GOD!!! Yup, I said it and I’ll say it again…GOD!
I am city girl at heart. I love the sounds and sights of a big city. The noise, the tall buildings, you name it, I love it. My sister is the beach girl. She can sit all day at the water’s edge with a cold drink and a good book. Me? I’m good for about two hours. One hour in the water, another on the sand and then I’m done for the day. What I do love is small beachy towns. Everything relaxed, at a slower pace–just like the small towns along the Jersey Shore on the way to Cape May (title of a song…look it up)
Anyway, my first real look at Hawaii was when my niece started watching Dog the Bounty Hunter. (she was young lol) I sat down and watched with her and kept watching cuz it was beautiful. A few years go by and the new Hawaii 5-0 starts…again, beautiful. The idea of living there popped into my head. What the what? Where did that come from? Shook my lil head and got that idea right outta there.
Fast forward two years and the idea pops up again only stronger and this time it won’t go away no matter what I do. Ok, fine…I go into work at The Cheesecake Factory and say, hey, can I transfer to Honolulu? The answer is yes and so I put in a transfer…approved 2 days later (which is super quick I hear)
Six weeks later, I got on a plane. I knew I wanted to get back into church, because A. it was time I did and B. it would be a great place to meet some nice people. Scrolling through the internet, I came upon a small church in Waikiki that I liked the look of-pastor was a former beach boy and life guard…looked perfect!!
Landed in Hawaii on a Friday and walked into church that Sunday. That day I met my gang: my best friend, a nice group of people and the man I am going to spend the rest of my life with. See…total God thing. That’s how He works sometimes, with just a small thought. So, be on the lookout and listen to those thoughts, you may just end up in your own paradise where everything is as it was meant to be.
****Question for the comments…If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
